Gwendolyn Marie McGraw Griffith
Gwendolyn Marie McGraw Griffith, 91, passed away at her home on Saturday, June 5, 2010, following a long illness.
She was born at Clute, WV, now Meadow Bridge, on Dec. 12, 1918. Marie was the first daughter born to Etsie Bryan McGraw and Grace Mae Cozort McGraw.
Marie was a former member of the Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Honus Wagner "Chub," were faithful members of the Rainelle United Methodist Church for many years. Marie graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1937. She attended Concord College and earned her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at Sturgeon Branch. She taught at Beelick Knob, Meadow Bridge (across from the current Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church), Bellwood, and East Rainelle. She was a substitute teacher at Crichton, Rainelle, and East Rainelle. She taught for 36 years and substituted for 18 years.
Those preceded her in death are her parents, Etsie B. McGraw and Grace M. Cozort McGraw; her husband of 34 years, Honus Wagner (Chub) Griffith; her brother, Roy B. McGraw; her sister, Maxine McGraw Russell; brother-in-law, Paul Kay Russell; niece, Marcia McGraw; and great-great-niece, Madison Furrow.
She is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Mildred McGraw of Meadow Bridge; sister, Shirley McGraw of Meadow Bridge; sister-in-law Louise McGraw of Beaver. She is survived by a nephew, Jerry D. McGraw, and nieces, Paula Kay (Sean) Mullen, Nancy (Warren) Reuschel, Janie (Greg) Moomaw and Teresa (Jim) Warner. She is also survived by 17 great-nieces and nephews and 16 great-great-nieces and nephews and special nephew, William "Bud" Harmon, and family.
Marie will be sadly missed by family, community, Madeline Martin and the students she loved and taught over the years, especially the Bellwood gang, who honored her with a party on August 2, 1997.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at the Rainelle United Methodist Church with Rev. Stanley Clark officiating. Closing prayer will be delivered by JW Puckett. Entombment will follow in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum in Clintonville.
