Email from Bill Simpkins – March 25, 2013
J C: Thanks for your contact. You are batting almost 1000. Louella's husband James William (J W) was next younger brother of my grandfather W T Martin Simpkins. My GP was the oldest of 11 kids born to Lewis Castle and Lucinda Jane Simpkins, and J W was next in line. J W and Louella had 13 kids, and only one of them is left - a dear, dear cousin Hazel Marie Simpkins Schwartz who lives in Plainview, TX and will turn 99 on May 27th!!!! Physically, she struggles, but her mind is sharp as a tack. I call her every couple of weeks or so, and we make each other laugh. I'm only 79, and sometimes she makes me think her 99 is younger. I am going to attach a lot of stuff for you; most of which I have sized down to easily email. Believe me, this barely scratches the surface of all I have o n J W and Louella's family. I just don't want to overwhelm you. Don't know how much of their story you know, so I will just touch on a couple of things. Most of J W's family were born in Heard County, GA, but my GP and he migrated across the border a few miles to Randolph County, AL. My GP was farming there and J W was teaching school. J W had never married, and at age 26 one of his pupils was a young lady named Emily Louella Hale; age 15. Louella was born there in AL, and was going to school - to her parents' credit. Most girls in particular in those days did not. Short version of th e story; they married, J W started farming since teachers were paid slave wages, and their family history began right there. The pictures and pedigree charts I have attached tell a fine story. They wound up in Haskell County, TX. Apparently, J W had a good farm there. In May 2011 my wife and I took a drive back to Texas. We live in Bakersfield, CA. Among other things, we visited Hazel in Plainview and helped her celebrate her 97th birthday. I learned a lot from her, but she doesn't remember a lot of things that I would like to have found out about. But I have a Flip-pal portable scanner and copied a whole bunch of her old pictures. She even had framed pictures of Bud and Zilphie Hale. It was like a gold mine. Two of the pictures attached here are of the adult children of J W and Louella, taken at the funeral for J W in 1941. One little daughter, Alice, had died quite young in 1899, and a son, Walter, born in 1910, only lived three years. So of the 13 born, the 11 pictured here survived well. In the picture of the daughters, Louella posed with them and is third from right. Well, J C; this should give you some fun input, and make you glad you asked if I was connected in some way. Actually, I have a double connection. My grandmother Simpkins was a Huddleston, and Zilphie's mother (Louella's grandmother) Sarah Anne Huddleston Dalrymple was her aunt. Hope all this is helpful. Best regards. Bill Simpkins
