Novella Cozort

Novella Cozort (daughter of John Harrison Cozort and Triza Eclantine McGraw) was born on September 26, 1914 in Ravencliff, Wyoming, West Virginia. She died on April 8, 2008 in Oceana, Wyoming, West Virginia. She married Jack Harding Ritchie (son of Charles C. Ritchie and Mary Elizabeth Nidiffer) on February 14, 1942 in Oceana, Wyoming, West Virginia. He was born on October 13, 1920 in Princeton, Mercer, West Virginia. He died on May 5, 2017 in Oceana, Wyoming, West Virginia.

Novella Cozort and Jack Harding Ritchie were buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, Raleigh, West Virginia.

Obituary of Novella Cozort Ritchie – April 2008
OCEANA - Novella Cozort Ritchie, 93, of Oceana, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008, following a short illness. Born Sept. 26, 1914, at Ravencliff, she was the youngest child of John "Jack" H. Cozort (1872-1958) and Triza Eclantine McGraw-Cozort (1879-1932). She grew up on her family’s farm in Crany and lived the rest of her life in Oceana. Novella graduated from Oceana High School in 1933 and was in one of the first graduating classes from Beckley College. She was a member of Oceana United Methodist Church. She taught school one year, then worked for Koppers Store, and also worked in the mine office at Lynco. She and her husband owned and operated Jack’s Transfer and later Ritchie’s Furniture in Oceana until their retirement in 1989. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Creed Cozort (1900-1921) and Vaughn Cozort (Deceased); and two sisters, Grace Cozort-McGraw (Deceased) and Virginia Cozort-Kennedy (Deceased). She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Jack Harding Ritchie (1920-2017) whom she married on February 14, 1942 in Oceana, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1942, Page 351, Application Date: February 4, 1942); a daughter, Betty Ritchie-Halsey and her husband, Fred Halsey, of Oceana; a granddaughter, Andrea Halsey-Hyett and her husband, Jason Hyett, of Clemmons, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Gerald Kincaid and the Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Jack Harding Ritchie, 96, of Oceana, WV passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017. He was born on October 13, 1920 in Princeton, WV a son of the late Charles C. Ritchie, Sr. (Deceased), and Mary Nidiffer-Ritchie (Deceased). Jack grew up in Bud, WV, and was a 1938 graduate of Herndon High School. He and his wife Novella were the owners and operators of Jack's Transfer in Oceana. As an agent for United Van Lines, he moved people in and out of Wyoming County for many years. They owned Ritchie's Furniture from 1956 until their retirement in 1989. Jack was a well respected, honest businessman, who treated everyone fairly. He was always a true gentleman. Until his health deteriorated, Jack faithfully attended Crany Missionary Baptist Church. He helped to establish the Oceana Fire Department and also was instrumental in bringing a bank to Oceana. He was one of the original directors of the Bank of Oceana and was extremely proud of his fifteen years of service as a director without missing a single board meeting. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, business partner and true love of his life, Novella Cozort-Ritchie (1914-2008) whom he married on February 14, 1942 in Oceana, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1942, Page 351, Application Date: February 4, 1942); his brothers, Charles C. Ritchie, Jr. (Deceased) and Paul C. Ritchie (Deceased), and their wives Dorothy Ritchie (Deceased), Marguerite Ritchie (Deceased) and Pat Ritchie (Deceased); his sisters, Mary Ritchie-Terry (Deceased), Josephine Ritchie-Canterbury-Adkins (Deceased) and Rachel Cozort-Lamb (Deceased), and their husbands Walt (Deceased), Doug (Deceased), Mason (Deceased), Vaughn (Deceased) and Harold (Deceased); sisters-in-law Grace McGraw (Deceased) and Virginia Kennedy (Deceased); and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Betty Halsey and Fred Halsey; his granddaughter Andrea Halsey-Fatony and her husband Dana Fatony; and his great grandson Dallas Fatony. He will be sadly missed by his family, his many friends, especially his good friends Bill and Regina Cook, and his caregivers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV, with Rev. Raybon Cook and Rev. William Cook officiating. He will be laid to rest in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, WV.

Rachel Mae Ritchie

Rachel Mae Ritchie (daughter of Charles C. Ritchie and Mary Elizabeth Nidiffer) was born on January 26, 1924 in West Virginia.  She died on April 11, 2003.  She married Vaughn J. Cozort (son John Harrison Cozort and Triza Eclantine McGraw). He was born on July 25, 1906 in West Virginia.  He died in November 1985.

1.  Elizabeth Catherine Cozort was born on October 2, 1961.

She married David Harold Lamb (son of Okey Johnson Lamb and Goldie Bailey).  He was born on April 3, 1921 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  He died on August 7, 1989 in Beckley, Raleigh, West Virginia.  

David Harold Lamb was buried in Kennedy Cemetery in Crany, Wyoming, West Virginia.

There were no children to this union.

Note:
Vaughn J. Cozort enlisted into the military on April 15, 1942 and served during WWII.

David Harold Lamb was married once before to Mildred Lee Cook (1923-1927) with whom he had the following children: Larry Lamb, Michael Ross Lamb, Vicki Lamb, and Kenny Lamb.

Vaughn J. Cozort (son John Harrison Cozort and Triza Eclantine McGraw) was born on July 25, 1906 in West Virginia.  He died in November 1985.  He married Rachel Mae Ritchie (daughter of Charles C. Ritchie and Mary Elizabeth Nidiffer).  She was born on January 26, 1924 in West Virginia.  She died on April 11, 2003.

Margaret Josephine Ritchie (daughter of Charles C. Ritchie and Mary Elizabeth Nidiffer) was born on July 16, 1922 in Bud, Wyoming, West Virginia. She died on September 15, 2003 in Beckley, Raleigh, West Virginia. She married James Douglas Canterbury (son of Monteville Perry Canterbury and Chloa Ann Cozart) on August 24, 1940 in Hardy, Pike, Kentucky. He was born on February 3, 1908 in West Virginia. He died on January 2, 1965 in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

James Douglas Canterbury and Margaret Josephine Ritchie were buried in Kennedy Cemetery in Crany, Wyoming, West Virginia.

Margaret Josephine Adkins OCEANA - Margaret Josephine "Jo" Adkins, 81, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, in Raleigh General Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Born July 16, 1922, at Bud, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Mary E. Ritchie. Mrs. Adkins was a member of Craney Missionary Baptist Church. In 2002 Mrs. Adkins retired from the Wyoming County Board of Education, working at Oceana Middle School with 22 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Douglas Canterbury; a son, Jim "Jim Doug" Canterbury; two brothers, James Elbert Ritchie and Dr. Charles C. Ritchie Jr.; and two sisters, Mary C. Terry and Rachel Cozort Lamb. Survivors include her husband, Mason Adkins; two brothers, Jack H. Ritchie and his wife, Novella, of Oceana and Paul C. Ritchie Sr. and his wife, Pat, of Beckley; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Canterbury of Oceana; a special friend, like a sister, Genevie Laxton of Oceana; three nieces, Dottie Thompson, Betty Halsey and her husband, Fred, and Susie Wolfe and her husband, Bob; five great-nieces, Tanya Garber and her husband, Phillip Jr., Andrea Halsey, Julie Cozort, Michelle Hoddox and her husband, Ted, and Catherine Thompson; four nephews, Paul Ritchie II and his wife, Pat, Jim Cozort and his wife, Patricia, Ed Cozort and his wife, Karen, and Gregg Smith; and two great-nephews, Adam Cozort and Justin Smith; a great-great-nephew, Teddy Hoddox; countless friends; and her second family, the staff of Oceana Middle School. James Douglas Canterbury
