Cecil Ernest Gladney, age 91, of Carrollton, GA, passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 following an extended illness. He was born on March 26, 1922 in Carrollton, Georgia to the late Mr. Samuel Calvin Gladney and Mrs. Mary Jones Gladney.He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II and the Battle of the Bulge. He entered the military services on November 23, 1942 through Fort McPherson, Georgia. He was trained as a mechanic to maintain the tanks and other machinery. He served continuously during D-Day up until the very end with meeting the Russians in Czechoslovakia. It gave him great joy and honor to serve and defend our great country. He was a member of the Buck Creek Lodge #639 American Legion #143 and Carroll Eastern Star.He married the love of his life, Pauline Hall on April 4, 1942, and together conceived their only child, Cecil Samuel (Sammy) Guilford Gladney, who was stillborn on October 24, 1943, while they were stationed at Camp Bowie, Texas. He owned and operated Cecil's Sales and Service Company in the hardware industry. He loved his career as a repair man because he was able to use this skill to minister to many people. He also gave much to his time as a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, in which he spent 15 years driving cancer patients to and fron doctor's appointments. He was a member of Clem United Methodist Church and was the founder of the Gladneys in America Reunions, which will take place in Carrollton, Georgia in 2014.Besides his parents, preceding him in death is his wife Pauline Gladney; infant son, Sammy Gladney; and sisters, Ezel Harper, Alice Fuller , and Geneva Davenport.Survivors include nieces and nephews, Jackie Harper Moore (Billy), Melba Smith (Michael), Carolyn Harper, Calvin Harper (Earline), W. C. Fuller (Ruth), and Pelham Harper (Marie); and numerous great-nieces and nephews.Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, GA.The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 from 5-8 p.m.
